Tuesday evenings are the night for special little jaunts around town. Carl Bean-Larson started the Tuesday night fixed gear ride which is now a tradition. We meet at 7:00 PM at the BrokeSpoke Coop in Higher Grounds Coffee's garage. Then we head off with someone just making up a route on the fly. It's always a blast and very different every time.
This week it was a small group charged with terrorizing the neighborhoods. Our only constraint was that we wanted to be at the Open Space by 8:30 PM to meet up with Jonathan Poole's trials bike crew.
Just as we were starting though, in front of the Pleasanton Bakery, just down the block from BrokeSpoke Coop, there was a truck with a flat tire. Two damsels in distress, Anna and Katie, both bread makers at the bakery. They'd gotten as far as yanking the spare out from underneath the little truck then discovered the truck had the wrong size tire iron. So stuck they were. First Anna called Eric, owner of said truck to come and save them. Eric is my kinda guy and was weighlayed at the Brewery.
So along comes our little crew on our intimidating little fixies. And whammo! Young Matt volunteers to run back to his truck to get a tire iron that works. In good Tom Sawyer fashion the gals, encourage him to help and soon enough Matt's got his helmet off and he's banging his knuckles. Now Katie comes out of the bakery with some of Gerards amazing organic neutron bomb granola cookies. BAM! Eventually Eric shows up weilding a rediculously large crescent wrench, waaaay too late to help, and there's lots of laughter and by now fifteen or so passersby.
Finally we peel off leaving Anna and Katie in Eric's hands. They'll regret that I imagine. And we meander our way out of town. So after a nice pristine ride into the Leelanau County side of the TART Trail we wound ourselves back and met the trials crew as promised back at the open space. The night gets weirder.
After a brief cruise down Union, then 8th, and Front Street, we ended up all standing in front of the Right Brain Brewery - IMAGINE THAT! A great night for everyone.
