‘Planet Backpacker’ Author Offers an Encore
Author Robert Downes will give an encore presentation of “How to Backpack Around the World” this Sunday, Dec. 21 from 2-4 p.m. at Horizon Books in Traverse City in support of his new book, "Planet Backpacker." The book is number one on the northern Michigan bestseller list for paperback nonfiction for the second week in a row, as reported in the Sunday editions of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. Downes spent five months traveling around the world in 2007, bicycling and camping his way across Europe on a 20-year-old mountain bike and backpacking on through Egypt, India and South Asia. His companion on the trip was a half-sized backpacking guitar, with which he held impromptu concerts at train stations and on the streets of the developing world. A resident of Traverse City, he says the title of the book refers to a way of life enjoyed by an estimated 100,000 backpackers who are roaming the world at any given moment. “Planet Backpacker is a parallel world of adventure that reveals itself to travelers, especially backpackers who journey close to the bone of other cultures,” Downes says.
