It was back in May of 2008 that I started BikeRiot. Slowly but surely we're building this into the defacto site for bicycle and pedestrian-specific information in Northwest Michigan. It's been a slow process, at least until now.
Last week's showing of the film Contested Streets ,and the discussion that followed, showed that even in the heart of a cold winter people could come together to talk about the safety of moving about their community. We figure about 70 people showed up. Those that stayed after the film got involved in a deep conversation about possible solutions and actions to help our community be a better place.
On the heels of that meeting, we convened an impromptu steering committee to take the energy from the film/discussion and make sure it kept moving forward. So as of today, I'm thrilled to report the formation of cross-organizational group dedicated to seeing the pedestrian / bike friendly elements of the Grand Vision become a reality. Based on the existing work of a national organization The Complete Streets Initiative will work with governments, nonprofits, businesses and individuals in the community to take real action towards fulfilling the vision of a truly great place to live and work.
The group set out a series of five priority items that came directly out of the Contested Streets discussion. This is great stuff! It makes me very hopeful. But there is not time to wait. We need you to get involved somehow. Whether its with the Complete Streets group or just by participating in this website. Look for the new "group" on the upper left side of the home page. That's will be the communication portal for the initiative. Check it out. Do something. Be part of the Riot!
