Herbal sleep aids are thankfully becoming more common, though it is troubling how much less frequently they are used than pharmaceutical drugs. Pharmaceutical sleeping pills should be reserved for only the most severe and treatment resistant cases of insomnia, and even then they should only be used on a temporary basis. Most people using them do not meet this criteria, and some of these people have been using prescription drugs for years when a far healthier herbal sleep remedy is available. Not only are herbal sleep aids much easier on the liver and kidneys, but they do not leave the user with a groggy and hung over feeling the next morning. Prescription drugs can have far more serious negative effects than just daytime drowsiness, sometimes they result in full blown hallucination, drastic personality change as well as others. Unfortunately after years of using pharmaceuticals, most patients now require them to get to sleep. Cessation of pharmaceutical drugs for sleep can be extremely difficult, but a herbal sleep aid can make the process much easier.

What kind of sleeping pill is the most effective and best for me? The newest sleeping pill is Ambien, though the fact that it is the newest does not make it the best. The side effects of the Ambien sleeping pill, the generic name being Lorazepam, are quite harsh. First of all, you should know that the Ambien sleeping pill cannot be taken by any person with liver or kidney disease, lung disease such as asthma, sleep apnea or depression. Among those who are eligible to take Ambien the sleep inducing effects vary from person to person as well as negative side effects. The sleeping pill causes hallucinations, personality changes, lack of coordination, blurred vision and others. To get the sleep you need without the side effects you don't a herbal sleeping pill can be easily and cheaply acquired in health food stores, online and in some pharmacies. While a herbal sleeping pill won't have the over powering effect that a prescription sleeping pill will, it is much safer and has few if any side effects. A herbal sleeping pill also does not lend itself to dependence or addiction.

There have been a lot of different sleeping drugs over the years and decades, but the most common sleeping drugs nowadays are either benzodiazepines like Xanax and Valium, or non-benzodiazepines like Ambien. Both types of prescription sleeping drugs have a lot of negative side effects like daytime drowsiness and confusion, though they can be far worse than that. Jaundice, or a yellowing of the skin has been reported from the use of sleep aids. Sometimes sleeping drugs cause memory loss, you recover without knowing what has happened the last few hours much like a blackout brought on from alcohol. Sleeping drugs also have led to sudden personality change as well. To avoid these, it is best to avoid sleeping drugs altogether. In their place, you can use natural remedies to get to sleep. There are no known side effects to most herbal sleeping remedies, and the best of them contain Valerian root and St John's Wort.
